Watermelon Wednesday: Undeniable

Watermelon Wednesday

Accessories can make or break any outfit, making them memorable for whatever reason, lol. In all honesty I am more of an accessory fan than clothing, because mixing & matching the little things can make the same old outfit a very different experience. You don’t have to have a huge wardrobe if you can dress up what you have in different ways. I imagine, at this point, you’ve realized that my accessory collection far outweighs my modest collection of fashionable clothing. Certain I am not alone in this, I feel that many women use this style hack (if it could even be called that, LOL). While this post is not as long & rambling as my previous Watermelon Wednesdays, I’m sure that you appreciate the break from my overly casual musings & memories. 😉 I found this lovely scarf at Lane Bryant, as I always seem to find something epic whenever I browse their collections, though I do note that you often have to invest in that style (in case you’re wondering that was a note about their prices being a little higher than many of the other places I frequently enjoy shopping).

Short Respite

Well, not really, I won’t have time to update my blog for a week or two as we finish the remodel of the back room. I just can’t find time to write post with a full time job & putting in full time like hours on finishing up the room. That sort of thing happens sometimes when you’re too cheap to hire pros to do it, LOL. Don’t worry, I will be back & it will be soon. In the meantime I will still be reading blogs & trying to keep up with social stuff hope you have a great couple of weeks! ❤

Magnificent Monday: Lark Voorhies

Magnificent Monday

One of the most popular shows of my youth, Saved by the Bell, really put Lark on my radar. Her character, Lisa, was ever stylish & super shopaholic, lol. I was a little surprised to find that this almost generation defining show (I find it amusing when I notice my nieces watching it on Netflix) actually began as Good Morning, Miss Bliss of the Disney Channel for a single season. I have not seen this first & was totally unaware of it’s existence as my family rarely had cable access in my early years. Luckily NBC purchased the series & continued it for several seasons. Since this time Voorhies has fallen away from the public eye to a great extent though she has published 3 books in that time. She always seemed so glamorous to me as a child so I thought she would be a great inclusion on Magnificent Monday. 🙂

Lark Voorhies

She appears to enjoy dramatic earring choices with some rather lovely statement necklaces. Not that her selections are limited to these simple observations, but I have chosen to focus on them. I compiled a small wishlist from Chicnova with some beautiful pieces that remind me of her style. 😉

Fantastical Friday: Crystals

Let’s face it, I can be a bit of a New Age Crystal Weenie (LOL). I like my crystals & I believe they can be very effective focal points for personal energies. Different crystals can be helpful to focus different kinds of energy, I’m not going to go into a detailed list in this post, but I do my research when choosing the right stone for the occasion. So I’ve put together a small wishlist of dazzling numbers I found while browsing about on Amazon for your perusal. 😉 Why Amazon you may ask, well, they just have about anything that exists & it’s so easy to find an unwieldy selection of whatever it is you’re looking for. 😀

Watermelon Wednesday: Charming

Watermelon Wednesday

I know we’ve all felt it at some time, perhaps to varying degrees, a moment of fixation. My mind is especially prone to fascination, often times over the simplest of things. When I was a little girl certain items were just magical, like finding an old key, didn’t matter that there was nothing for it to fit to, the entire concept of the key was mystical & likely to be something my toddler self would take to enshrine in a drawer in my room. Years ago I accidentally left my driver’s license in a fitting room & when I returned to the shop hours later, as I had discovered my accident, it was nowhere to be found. I couldn’t help but think that maybe a small child had picked it up & claimed it as a holy relic, as I might have at a similar age. Some of the little thoughts that run through our minds on occasion can be funny like that, almost wistful even. For me these little fixations still come upon me at times, not that I pocket these things anymore as I have grown some self-restraint & discipline since I was toddling about, but some things just somehow hold sway over my attention so completely. It’s almost as if I failed my saving throw as a charm spell fell over me, lol. Those of you who have been following me for a while may have noticed that I am drawn to turquoise, so many of the pieces crafted with it & even the raw stones themselves have this sway over me. I was window shopping at Target the other day & found this lovely necklace that has been on my mind, here & there, since I spied it (I believe I have displayed similar pieces before, maybe even the same one, LOL).

Magnificent Monday: Nina Simone

Magnificent Monday

The late, great Nina Simone with her mesmerizing stage presence, amazing voice & accomplished piano work made some very interesting marks in history. Her family did not agree with her choice to play “the Devil’s music” which led to her changing her name from Eunice Kathleen Waymon to her more famously known name. In her younger years she was denied entry to the Curtis Institute of Music after an audition that went very well, which led her to believe it was racially motivated (the school denies this & had previously admitted students of African American heritage, but one also has to consider the time frame, for it may still have been a factor). They did give her an honorary degree days before she passed from this world, which seems like an awful long time for them to wait for such a thing when she auditioned in 1951 & received the later honor in 2003. It is also to be noted that Nina was known for her violent temper, which probably had to do with a variety of factors, such as her bipolar diagnosis in 1980 (which meant she was undiagnosed & untreated throughout most of her life) & of course the racial abuse suffered by all persons of color in her formative years. While she was a civil rights activist she advocated a more violent approach to the problem at hand, which I believe also related to her bipolar condition & temper. Later in her autobiography she mentioned that her & her family had considered people of all colors to be equal, some may find it difficult to believe with her militant hard line during the civil rights movement, but I find it to be believable that she & many others would be angry enough & fed up enough to think of violence as the only solution left to try without considering others lesser due to their color. There you have it, she was a complicated person who led an interesting life & left us with a spectacular legacy.

As to her style & it’s evolution through the years I notice that she liked to make a statement with her brazen necklaces & bold earring choices. While some of this was toned down more in her later years it never really disappeared. So I put together a little wishlist of some flamboyant pieces I found while browsing about Jolly Chic that reminded me of her elegance. 😉

Fantastical Friday: More Zombies :D

Fantastical FridayDragon clip art attribution link

With Fear the Walking Dead returning on Sunday & October drawing ever nearer with The Walking Dead & it’s big reveal looming in the forecast, I thought it was about time to revisit some zombie fashion. 😀 I’m sure most of you know how into this genre I am & needless too say things are starting to get exciting for my undead tv action, LOL. Of course, like most fans I both look forward to & dread that aforementioned big reveal, as we all know a major player will be lost from the game with a whole new ordeal before us (some of us read the comics too, but still have no clue where AMC might choose to go with this story line). Not that Fear’s outlook isn’t equally bleak with so much of the group splitting apart in the mid-season finale (why oh why did the mighty AMC make the mid-season a thing?).  While I anxiously await the hungry hordes, I couldn’t resist building a little wish list from Amazon. 😉

Watermelon Wednesday: This & That

Watermelon Wednesday

When I was a a little girl I had a tendency to rebel against everything that was considered girlie, I honestly felt stifled by the expected role that many of the older members of my family & society at large had already decided for me. I hated that my beloved Grammy would give me dolls every Christmas, dolls I kept telling her I had zero interest in. Even when I became a teen & demanded a Guns ‘N Roses t-shirt for the holiday, she did send me one, but she also gave a copy of the same shirt, a Led Zeppelin & another cool band shirt I don’t at the moment recall to my older brother. He didn’t ask for them & in fact the 1 shirt I asked for was all that I received from her that year, not that I mind getting a single present, but why in the world would she not only gift the exact same item to my brother, but bestow upon him even more epic shirts as well. So, refusing to wear dresses, bows & ribbons for a long time seemed to cause a certain amount of unintended distancing between me & some of my loved ones. Some of this rebellion continues in me today, I like the look of some purses, but frequently I do not use them, from my teen years to now I have been a backpack girl. When I first started carrying a backpack with me everywhere there were none with a purse like design in existence, I wore out so many school style & small hiking backpacks which were never designed for continuous & constant use I can’t even tell you how much it cost me over time, LOL. As I began to come into my own as an adult the age of the backpack purse was just beginning, my first designed in this way was a gift from my father on my birthday. It was dark brown leather (probably faux) with beautiful stitch detailing. I loved that bag & it took me years to wear it out, unlike the inferior daily use ones that only lasted a few months of my tomboyish lifestyle. Despite being drawn to some more “traditional” bags I find them cumbersome & continue using the backpack style I have always favored. While at the moment I keep a black faux leather pack for work & a much more playful (also larger) bag for my personal time I do wish to continue collecting various styles that will complement my outfit choices differently over time. So today I found a beautiful bag that I quite like from Jolly Chic to highlight for you today. 😉 The description does indicate that it’s meant for school use, but the look of the product is more purse like in style & has a definite feminine flair.

Magnificent Monday: Dionne Warwick

Magnificent Monday

Ever elegant Dionne can’t help but inspire others in their pursuit of finer qualities. I first noticed her when I was a small child & her voice became instantly recognizable to me. She has dabbled in acting as well, having numerous appearances throughout various popular shows, including an episode of Captain Planet in which she voice acted (I love that show, especially when I was younger, but still to this day). She is another icon who enjoys charity work, back in the day she created the Warwick Foundation which worked for those suffering from AIDS & while it’s history is not without some controversy I must point out that numerous, legally existing charities work with higher overhead & often contribute nothing to the cause they claim to promote while her foundation did give money to the cause they represented. The Warwick Foundation was later dissolved, perhaps due to the headaches caused by claims of impropriety despite them being dismissed by government after their investigation. She has also contributed all of her share of royalties from the song Starlight to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. In 2002 she was nominated Goodwill Ambassador of the Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN as well.

She is so regal & her style so tasteful Dionne always appears so noble. I’ve chosen to mostly focus on her beautiful taste in necklaces & threw in a few bracelets in my window shopping list. Everything in today’s selections come from Billy the Tree, where there is always an excellent selection (I know I adore the pieces I have thus far been able to gather from their site).

Fantastical Friday: Bet You Didn’t Know

Fantastical FridayDragon clip art attribution link

Yup, it’s revelation time, you might find it surprising, or maybe not. I enjoy crochet, as well as other crafts, but crochet is more of a passion for me. I haven’t really had the time or supplies to do much with it in recent years, but there are so many projects I yearn to yarn (LOL). My old scarf is beginning to look a bit ratty & I would like to make a whole new series for the coming months, if I get a chance. It would also be nice to work with some of the higher quality yarns, that I have never actually worked with before. Of course there are the super fun projects I’ve been daydreaming about for a long time, like making a cute, cuddly, stuffed Cthulhu (you probably do know I’m a horror fan, by this point in our relationship, lol). Hopefully soonish I will be making an order to get some of the supplies I will be needed for the numerous projects I long to be working on in my not so copious free time. I have found a great place to find yarns of various qualities (though they do not seem to have crochet thread) & you might have noticed the small banner to the right (or maybe you’re viewing this on your phone, then I don’t know where it might be LOL) for Fabric.com. Here are a few of the lovely colors that I found during my recent window shopping (after the wedding I will have more available resources & can share some of the cool things I work on with you), I’m sure you will also notice that the last item on the list is much more expensive than any of the others (would love to make some winter accessories from that particular color & quality).
